Recess, Is Dead.

I’ve been a student teacher for two days now and the biggest thing I’ve taken away from my experience so far (besides being smarter and bigger) is that recess seems to have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

I don’t know when recess died, like any normal person, I’ve never returned to any of the schools I previously attended. Here’s a little tip, if you find yourself back at your old “stomping grounds” you’re a loser who hasn’t gotten over the past.

Anyways, for most children, recess was a gift from god and finding out that it has been taken away from the youth, is like finding out, your childhood friend got hit by a truck. It may not impact you fully, but you still feel sad.

The irony of all this, is how adults routinely complain about how fat we’ve all gotten. You can say it’s the video games all you want but when you start limiting kids to 30 minutes of outdoor time at school, they’re gonna start packing on the pounds.

At least when I was in middle school they had DPA (Daily Physical Activity) every couple days to keep us at comically obese and not grossly obese. But, as I look at my  schedule, DPA, like recess, is nowhere to be found.

Whose behind this? It’s too early to tell. If this were a cartoon I’d guess that someone at the TDSB was a vampire or at least hated the sun but I’m running low on leads.

All I know, is that by the time I have kids (assuming I’m not shooting blanks), the school will probably keep them cooped up from the time they get there to the time they go home, in some dark and mangy room.

I can say all this because I’m currently sitting in a class that doesn’t have asingle  window. Wondering, what lays beyond these hollow doors….
